What are Acid Reflux and Heartburn?
Acid reflux is a common digestive disease caused by the backwash of bile into the esophagus. The acidic contents of bile can cause a burning sensation in the chest known as heartburn. If left untreated, acid reflux can lead to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is a more serious condition that can cause long-term damage to the esophagus.
Signs and Symptoms of Acid Reflux and Heartburn
The most common symptom of acid reflux is heartburn. Often described as an uncomfortable burning sensation in the chest and/or abdomen, heartburn may last for a few minutes or several hours. Other common symptoms of acid reflux include chest pain, difficulty swallowing, regurgitation, and a sour taste in the mouth.
How the Upper Cervical Spine Affects Acid Reflux and Heartburn
The relationship between the upper cervical spine and acid reflux is not immediately apparent. However, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests that misalignments in the upper cervical spine can indeed contribute to the development of acid reflux and heartburn. In particular, a number of studies have linked upper cervical vertebral misalignments to a loosening of the esophageal sphincter, which allows stomach acid to leak back up into the esophagus. The loosening of the esophageal sphincter is likely related to misalignment-induced dysfunction in the vagus nerve, a cranial nerve responsible for regulating digestion and stomach acid production.
How Our Treatment Works for Acid Reflux and Heartburn
At our clinic, we focus on correcting the underlying cause of acid reflux and heartburn. To do so, our two expert chiropractors, Dr. Christina Coblish and Dr. Ryan Moeskau, utilize the Blair Upper Cervical technique, a precise and gentle chiropractic method that has been shown to be extremely effective in treating a wide variety of conditions, including acid reflux and heartburn.
In order to determine whether your acid reflux is due to a misalignment in your upper cervical spine, Dr. Coblish and Dr. Moeskau use a range of advanced 3D imaging tools. This process typically includes the use of cone-beam computed tomography, a dynamic scan that allows our team to view the vertebrae of the upper cervical spine in great detail. Throughout the diagnostic process, we typically pay special attention to the first two cervical vertebrae, the atlas, and the axis, which are particularly susceptible to misalignments.
If a misalignment is detected, Dr. Coblish and Dr. Moeskau will use the Blair technique to gently realign the affected vertebrae and restore them to their natural position. Remember, our treatment process is built around precise, low-force adjustment techniques. We’ll never use treatments that require painful popping, cracking, or twisting of the neck.
